Are you looking for fun things to do at home when you’re bored?

As a stay-at-home mom, you may find that you’re waaaaaaaaay too busy to be bored most of the time, but that doesn’t mean it never happens.

Studies show that stay-at-home moms sometimes suffer from monotony, restlessness, and extreme boredom when they are at home caring for kids, doing chores, and not practicing self-care to maintain their sense of well-being.

A lot of people have the misconception that moms who work from home have a lot of free time on their hands and engage in fun activities all day.

But that’s simply not the case because they are so busy taking care of everyone else!

In this post, I’m going to share some fun things to do at home when you’re bored out of your mind as a stay-at-home mom, and I hope you get to incorporate them daily!

Here we go!

1. Do a Scavenger Hunt With the Kids

What’s more fun than a scavenger hunt in the backyard? Kids love them, and I don’t see why moms can’t engage in the fun too!

A scavenger hunt can be a way to have a bit of fun with your kids and reduce boredom.

Getting outside to do a nature scavenger hunt will only add to the excitement. You can create a list of things for your kids to find outside such as:

  • Bugs and other critters
  • Leaves with cute patterns
  • Oddly shaped stones
  • Acorns and Pinecones

You can have the scavenger hunt timed and see how many things your kids can find in the allotted time.

Why not try switching places with your kids and allow them to hide things for you to find?

This could add even more value to family time.

If an outdoor family game of scavenger hunt doesn’t intrigue you and you’re more the indoorsy type, you can always do a virtual scavenger hunt that the kids will definitely love.

2. Cook Something Different

If you cook multiple meals a day like I do, then you know how monotonous it can be sometimes.

Add a bit of fun and create something out of the box and ask the kids for help.

Do you cook much of the same thing all the time?

Shake it up with some cuisine from Greece or Italy and then while having dinner, pretend that you’re vacationing there.

Before you create the meal, it would be great if you created a meal plan and incorporate your children, just so they understand how shopping for groceries works and how they can budget when shopping themselves.

3. Do Some Gardening

Gardening is not only relaxing, but it can relieve stress and anxiety as well.

You may be feeling overwhelmed as a mom and need a break from the chores or your kid’s constant banter.

If that’s the case, taking some time each day to work on a garden can really be fun!

First, think about what you’d like your garden to look like and draw inspiration from places like The Spruce Garden or Better Homes and Gardens.

Would you like to create a vegetable garden?

How about succulents or a cottage-type garden? It’s totally up to you!

If your kids are interested and would like to help, then that’s a bonus and it can be a way of bonding for the family that involves a relaxing activity.

4. Watch Fun Videos

This can be one of the more fun things to do at home if you’re bored, especially if it’s something humorous.

It’s always best if you can spend the time with the entire family watching wholesome shows or documentaries that can bring you closer together.

If you need time alone then you have plenty of options to choose from on Youtube or Netflix.

You can be productive while doing something fun, by watching videos online and making money doing it!

5. Play Tag or Hide and Seek

Tag and Hide and Seek are a favorite pastime of kids and adults can definitely get in on the fun too!

You and the kids try your game inside or you get outside as that gives you more space to play around.

If you haven’t played these games for a while, it’s time to change things up with some innocent fun.

6. Read Aloud With the Kids

Whatever age your kids are, there’s no time when reading aloud with them isn’t allowed.

I homeschool and it’s something I try to incorporate almost every day.

When your kids are very young, picture books with fewer words are ideal but if they’re older, then you can use more suitable options for them.

You can get an excellent selection of kid-friendly books here:

7. Buy Something Nice for Yourself

Sometimes we might feel hesitant to spend a little money on ourselves as moms, but it can really be a nice way to treat ourselves.

Maybe you’ve wanted to splurge on something for a while now but you felt guilty because you think it should go toward the kids.

However, you can put aside a little treat box for yourself and drop money in it occasionally.

Do something that feels nice and can lift your spirits. It could be a nice outfit, a subscription box, or a planner or journal to jot stuff down.

Whatever it is, just make sure you enjoy it!

8. Start a Blog

Starting a blog might not be the easiest, but it’s certainly fun.

I enjoy writing very much, so this blog actually means a lot to me.

I love love love writing to other moms and giving them tips on working from home. This blog for example caters specifically to stay-at-home moms like me and helps them with starting an online business, blogging, and productivity.

Is there something you’d like to help other people with?

It could be finances or budgeting, pregnancy tips, recipes, homesteading or personal development.

Whatever it is, just know that you can actually make a full-time income from blogging.

9. Spend Quality Time Alone

This might not sound fun for many but for moms with kids, this time can never be enough.

Of course, we love our kids and family, but the time comes when we just need a little alone time.

Sometimes you may need a short breather to rest and relax or to rejuvenate your mind.

It’s always best as a stay-at-home mom to practice practical self-care to ensure you’re caring for yourself just as you do everyone else.

You may find that after taking some quality time for yourself, you will feel refreshed and much ready to tackle the day (or night) ahead.

10. Do a Camp Out in the Backyard

Camping might not be for everyone, but it can make for a really nice adventure for you and the kids.

Most children do enjoy being outside, and if they’re camping with mom by their side, what could be better?

A nice way to start is to set up a tent outside and have a great time grilling veggies and shish kabobs together.

To add to the fun, set animal cricket sounds to play and the sound of a brook running to make it more realistic.

11. Play Games

This can be one of the best ways to have fun at home when you’re bored.

Try playing games together and taking turns with the controller when playing video games.

One of my favorites, when I was younger, was Animal Crossing. It’s great for kids and adults of all ages!

You can do things like fishing, shopping, bug hunting, and making snowmen.

If you don’t like virtual games that much, you can play family board games and challenge yourself to win!

12. Do Puzzles

Playing puzzles can really bring the family together and create hours of fun for you and the kids.

Puzzles do help younger children with motor skills and will certainly pass the time on a rainy day inside.

Any type of puzzle can work really, as kids aren’t that picky when it comes to these things.

If they have a favorite cartoon, you can purchase the puzzles for that as it may intrigue them more or you can try these unique wooden puzzles that you don’t see every day.

13. Make a Fort

Building a fort can be a real challenge, and also lots of fun. I know a lot of families do pillow forts and kids do really love that.

They can spend hours in their little forts, reading, playing, or pretending they’re camping.

Forts can create a nice playtime activity and kids can act out scenes and pretend they’re in a  different era and you can play along as well.

Be sure to make them dress up for the activity as you do want to make it as realistic as possible.

There are plenty of awesome fort-building equipment out there that will make your life very easy.

14. Start a Hobby

Your hobby can be just about anything.

Do you like making crafts? Then get out the craft set or your Cricut tool and start making some designs.

There are lots of handmade crafts that people will pay big bucks for.

If you enjoy sewing, you could try to develop your skills and have the kids learn alongside you as well.

Another popular skill that you could try is photography and you can enroll in a few courses to help you along on your journey.
